Official Drommedaris Opening.

Thursday 24 March 2011 will go down in Communicare’s history as a red letter day. It was the day that the Minister of Human Settlements, Minister Tokyo Sexwale officially opened the Company’s first Social Housing project, Drommedaris. The R75 million Drommedaris is a social housing project by the 80-year-old Cape company, Communicare, on Koeberg Road Brooklyn. Developed over the past 15 months, it provides 219 rental units. The development consists of bachelor, 1 and 2 bedroom units with monthly rentals ranging from R750 – R2250.

All the speakers at the event expressed their deep appreciation for the quality of the units and the ideal location of the project. Premier Helen Zille noted that the project is an excellent example of what can be achieved if national, provincial and local government cooperate. Managing Director of Communicare, Chris Matthias concurs. The project he says: “…is significant in terms of public/private partnerships, which are critically important to make social housing feasible and viable”. In the case of Drommedaris it involved all three spheres of government, an international donor and Communicare.

Communicare’s investment in Brooklyn is part of a broader strategy to regenerate the area. It is located close to public facilities such as a library, clinic, schools and provides easy access to road and rail transport facilities.

Only a few rental opportunities are still available. The Brooklyn area office can be contacted on 021 – 511 6759
