Herman Fourie
         

 

A chartered accountant, Herman has been associated with Communicare since 1972 and Chairman of the board since 1989. Having obtained a B.Comm at Stellenbosch University he took articles with an accounting firm, which now forms part of Ernst & Young. He completed his CTA and B.Comm (Hons) through the University of South Africa and in 1972 he joined Communicare (then the Citizens Housing League) as Senior Manager Accounts. In 1980 he joined Haak Fourie & Snyman (Chartered Accountants) and is presently the Managing Partner. In 1984, while remaining involved in this practice, he joined Barno Plastics (Pty)Ltd and is presently Chairman. He serves on the Remuneration and Audit Committees. He is a Rotarian and a keen supporter of sport.

         
Gerhard Johann Schroder
         

 

Born in Cape Town on 7 July 1946, he grew up in Stellenbosch where he matriculated at Paul Roos Gymnasium in 1964.
He thereafter studied law at the University of Stellenbosch where he obtained the qualification B.A. LLB and thereafter qualified as an attorney during 1973.
He opened his own practice in Kuils River on the 1 April 1975 under the name of Gerhard Schroder Attorneys where he is presently still specialising in conveyancing and property development. During 1979 he was appointed to the panel of Attorneys of Communicare and thereafter joined the Board of Communicare in 1989 and is currently Vice Chairman. He has also served as Chairman of the Property Committee for some years.

         
Anne Emmett
         
 

She has a B.A.(Honours) degree from UCT and for some years has served as the Executive Director of the Equal Opportunity Foundation followed by a period as General Manager, Western and Northern Cape region for the National Development Agency. Currently she practices as an independant consultant focusing on development finance, grant making, corporate social investment and sustainability planning. She is a former Senior Fellow of the Synergos Institute, New York and participates in ongoing debates and forums of development finance practitioners around the world. She has expertise in organisational development and strategic management as well as in gender and development. She is a board member of the Southern African Grant Maker Association, the WHEAT Trust and Vice-Chairperson of The Caring Network. She has played an active role in many civic and social organisations, usually in a leadership position.

         
Allan Hardie
         
 

Having managed his own publishing agency business for some 13 years he became Managing Director of The Heritage Collection. On the sale of this business he managed MSL Management Consultants in Cape Town and later was appointed Regional Director of Thomas International. He is currently a Director of Thomas International Africa, Asia Pacific. He is an independant consultant specialising in Employment Equity facilitation, Strategic Planning, Team development, and Behavioural Styles Analysis. He was one of the initiators of the Life Line Counselling service in South Africa and Director of the Cape Town Life Line centre for 7 years. Later he served as a board member and Chairman of St. Luke's Hospice for 10 years. He has been a member of the Communicare Board since July 2002 and serves on the Commercial Retirement Complexes, Human Resources and Social Investment Committees.

         
Anthea Houston
         
 

Anthea graduated from the University of Cape Town with a postgraduate diploma in Management: Organisation and Management. She has a Licentiate Diploma in Banking from the Institute of Bankers in South Africa . She is the Chief Executive Officer of the Development Action Group, a South African non-profit company active in the field of community based housing and urban development. She is a Fellow of the African Leadership Initiative a programme of the Aspen Institute (U.S.A.) and the Letsema Foundation. She is a member of the Institute for Housing in South Africa and has been an activist in her local community and in South Africa 's development sector for 20 years. She is passionate about social justice and works to strengthen the value-based leadership approach within South Africa 's nonprofit sector. She is also a keen activist for gender equity. She joined the Communicare Board of Directors in 2006 and serves on the Social Housing and Community Development Committee as well as the Remuneration Committee.

         
Clive Justus
         
 

After obtaining B.Sc, B.Ed, H.D.E. degrees at UCT he started his working life as a teacher at Thornton High School before moving to the Department of Biological Sciences at the Cape Technikon lecturing in Botany and Environmental studies. From 1988 to 2001 he was elected a Councillor for the City of Cape Town and served on the Executive Committee from 1998 to 2002 during which time he was also chairperson of the Planning Committee. On the Cape Metropolitan Council he was appointed Deputy Chair - Transportation and Traffic Committee and Chairman of the board of trustees of the Cape Municipal Pension Fund. He is currently a Unicity Councillor and serving on the Trading Services Committee. He re-joined the Board of Communicare in July 2002 after serving initially from 1993 to 1995. He is a member of the Property Committee.

         
Paul Kleinsmidt
         
 

Deeply involved in civic affairs, he is presently an elected Councillor of Unicity Ward 28 and Chairman of Sub-council no.5 Unicity. From 1984 to 1994 he was an elected member of Parliament for the constituency of Elsies River (House of Representatives) and an elected Leader of that house from 1991 to 1994. From 1997 to 1999 he was a Member of the National Assembly. Prior to that he was elected Deputy Mayor of Tygerberg City Council. For many years he was a member of Non-European Unity Movement, the Anti-Card Movement, an associate member of the Teacher's League of South Africa and Hon. Treasurer and member of the Labour Party of South Africa. He has played key roles in lawn tennis, rugby, table tennis and body building associations as well as involving himself in the leadership of various horticultural societies. He has been a Communicare Board member, representing the MEC of Housing, since 1994. He is a member of the Remuneration Committee.

         
Chris Mathias
         
 

Chris served articles of clerkship with an auditing practice which now forms part of the Ernst & Young stable. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1978 and holds a B Comm Honours degree in Business Data Processing. He spent a short time in the Motor Industry before moving to the Pharmaceutical Industry where he was appointed C E O of Amalgamated Chemists in 1990. In 1993 he assisted in setting up the first manufacturer based distributor in South Africa , International Healthcare Distributors where he was Regional Executive for the Western and Eastern Cape . In 1995 he purchased a share in a Software company and joined Communicare as General Manager in 2001. He was appointed Managing Director on 28 March 2006.

         
Monde Skade
         
 

A professional Civil Engineer who holds a Masters Degree in Engineering from Southern Illinois University, USA. His areas of key experience are Roads and Municipal Infrastructure. He is also a Director of a firm of consulting engineers that has offices in all the major centres of the country, as well as being a Director of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company in Cape Town. He joined the Board of Communicare in mid-2000 and brings to it 25 years of technical expertise, as well as a wealth of low-cost housing infrastructure development experience from the Gauteng Department of Housing.
