Zerilda Steyn Loan Fund

“I will be forever grateful to Communicare for assisting me in creating a brighter future for myself”

These are the words of one of our Loan recipients, Delicia Adams, a final year LLB student at the University of The Western Cape (UWC).

This loan fund for tertiary education is managed in partnership with the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The Means Test enables us to select the most academically deserving and financially needy students.

During 2007 Communicare contributed R 288 421 and in 2008, we contributed R 94 560 to tetrtiary students.

We are immensely proud of being associated with NSFAS and these young persons who despite challenging social circumstances focus on their studies and achieve success.

Communicare staff host Chrismas Party

Communicare staff opened their hearts and pockets by hosting a Christmas Party for children residing in the Bloekombos and Wallacedene Informal Settlements.

Laughter and excited chatter permeated the air as the children were entertained with a jumping castle, slip ’n slide and face painting. They were also served delicious eats and treats while Father Christmas brought a gift for each child.

The party was the culmination of a fundraising effort by dedicated Communicare staff. These events included a karaoke and cake sales.

According to a staff member, Wendy Van Rooy, who together with her daughter Candice assisted us with the preparations for the Christmas Party, volunteering her time for this cause was a “very rewarding and enjoyable experience”.

According to another staff member, Linda Jooste, committing random acts of kindness is one of the most established and popular happiness boosters. It not only results in appreciating my life more, but it also makes me feel strong and more capable. The more random I get, the longer the feeling lingers. I am still experiencing the effect of the Christmas Party for the kiddies from Wallacedene and Bloekombos informal settlements.

Did you know?

Using volunteers on these projects ensures that costs are kept to a minimum. The homeowner is only responsible for repaying the cost of the building material through an interest-free, non-profit but inflation adjusted mortgage. Repayments are deposited into a revolving fund and used to build more affordable houses in the same community.

On the 10th of November 2007 a group of eager and excited Communicare staff members participated in a Blitz Build in Mfuleni.

The Blitz Build was organised by Communicare in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity South Africa, a non-profit, non-government organisation whose vision is “A world where everyone has a decent place to live.”

The Communicare volunteers worked side by side with the homeowner, Thembisa Labithi and other community members on a beautiful sunny day, laying the foundation of the house and with it a safer and more secure future for the family who will inhabit it. The Build is in line with Communicare’s ethos “We protect the most vulnerable”.

Communicare firmly believe in the concept of Ubuntu, were the community helps one another in order to have a protective and safe environment. A person is a person through others “Umntu ngumntu ngabantu” The idea is to encourage social investment, where individuals and companies assist in the development of less fortunate communities.
